Year of National Literacy and Culture

At the beginning of the New Year, the Mongolian Government issued a resolution declaring 2024 as the “Year of National Literacy and Culture”. The resolution states that the 800th anniversary of Chinggis khaan’ stone inscription and the 400th anniversary of  Stone Inscriptions of Tsogtu Khung-Taiji, Prince of Khalkha is going to celebrated in 2024, respectively, according to Article 5.2 of the Law on Public Celebrations and Commemorative Days.

On April 24th of last year, G.Mend-Ooyo, a writer and poet who was awarded the Chinggis Khaan Order, sent an open letter to President U. Khurelsukh and Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene. In his letter, he reminded them that 2024 will be the anniversary of the historical monuments of Mongolian literacy and proposed to declare 2024 as the “Year of National Literacy and Culture” to make it a big wave of national literacy and book culture. The letter mentions the 800th anniversary of the creation of the ancient monument of Mongolian writing known as the Chinggis Khan stone inscription, the anniversary of the Tsogt rock script carved in the black stone of Duut in 1624, and the 100th anniversary of the treaty of Danjuur, the Mongol ruler. It explains that it is a historical courage to revive the memory of national literature and culture and ignite the national will to create a new heritage. Following this letter, the Mongolian Government declared this year as the “Year of National Literacy and Culture”.
